Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)

This test is used to detect tumors that mark cancers of the liver, testes, and ovaries. AFP is a substance naturally produced by the liver of a fetus. Normally, low levels of AFP can be found in the blood of a pregnant woman. No AFP (or only a very low level) is usually found in the blood of healthy men or healthy, nonpregnant women. AFP is a substance naturally produced by the liver of a fetus.
