Diabetes

  • Glucose

Serum glucose is necessary to diagnose, screen and monitor treatment of diabetes. Levels of glucose are elevated in diabetics and may be low in case of inappropriate diabetic treatment or while fasting/dieting. Glucose is a simple sugar that serves as the main source of energy for the body. Most of the body cells require glucose for energy production; brain and nervous system cells not only rely on glucose for energy, they can only function when glucose levels in the blood remain above a certain level.

Recommended for: Diabetes mellitus work-up, family history of diabetes, monitoring efficiency of diabetes treatment.

    Estimated turnaround time: 1 day.

Additional notes: Must fast 8-10 hours prior to testing

  • The Hemoglobin A1c Test (HbA1c)

HbA1c test is used in diabetics to show how well you've controlled your blood sugar during the preceding 3-month period. Red blood cells live about 3 months before they die off and are replaced by new ones. During their life span, they carry glycated hemoglobin with them. By measuring the amount of HbA1c you will get an average of what your blood sugar has been over that period. The higher the HbA1c, the higher the average blood sugar and the more chance you will experience complications from your disease. This test can also serve as a warning sign that you may be diabetic if you do not already have the disease.

Recommended for: Diabetics to assess their glucose control.

    Estimated turnaround time: 1 day

  • FSH & LH Blood Test

The FSH test measures the level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in your blood. This hormone is produced by the pituitary gland in your brain. In women FSH stimulates the production of eggs and is important in the regulation of menstruation. In men FSH stimulates the production of sperm. Luteinizing hormone (LH) is produced by the pituitary gland. Along with other hormones (follicle-stimulating hormone and estrogen), LH helps regulate the menstrual cycle in women and causes ovulation to occur. LH is usually measured in both a man and a woman to determine why the couple cannot achieve pregnancy (infertility).

Recommended for: Women who are having difficulty getting pregnant or are having irregular menstrual periods; Men who have a low sperm count, low muscle mass or decreased sex drive; Those who have symptoms of a pituitary or hypothalamic disorder

Cancer Screening

  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

Used to detect PSA. PSA is a protein produced only by the prostate gland. The prostate makes the fluid that nourishes sperm and carries sperm during ejaculation. The amount of PSA produced by the prostate gland can be helpful in detecting prostate cancer. This test is commonly used with the digital rectal exam to screen for prostate cancer. If you have prostate cancer a PSA can be an important tool used to follow the response to treatment for the cancer. In general, serum PSA levels increase due to physical changes to prostate architecture caused by trauma, infection, inflammation, prostate manipulation, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) or malignancy.

Recommended for: Men aged 50 and older should get tested yearly. If you are experiencing symptoms such as painful or frequent urination or have a family history of prostate cancer, it is recommended to get tested earlier.

    Estimated turnaround time: 2 days

Additional notes: Recommended to avoid ejaculation 24 hours prior to giving sample as it may cause higher PSA levels. Also, sample should be collected before a digital rectal exam (DRE) and prostate biopsy are performed.
